The Interstate Air Quality Council was created on May 31, 2005 by a memorandum of understanding signed by the Governor of Maryland, the Governor of Virginia, and the Mayor of the District of Columbia. The Council will work with the Metropolitan Washington Air Quality Committee of the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments, and help streamline planning to meet new federal standards for ozone and fine particulates.
The Council consists of six members: the secretaries of the environment and transportation from each of the three governments represented on the Council.
