The Task Force to Study Identity Theft formed in July 2005 (Chapter 241, Acts of 2005). Its charge is to study the scope of identity theft in Maryland, including: problems victims face in repairing their credit history; the adequacy of State laws in deterring identity theft; and the efficacy of privacy laws both federal and in other states. The Task Force will consult with identity theft experts; federal agencies, such as the Federal Trade Commission and the Federal Bureau of Investigation; and relevant agencies in other states. To determine compliance with State and federal laws governing the collection and use of Social Security numbers, the Task Force will survey State agencies. Finally, the Task Force will formulate strategies to combat identity theft, including possible statutory changes.
Authorization for the Task Force ends January 31, 2007.
